Prior to embarking on ambitious zombie epic “The Dead Next Door” (1990), director J.R. Bookwalter learned the ropes making nearly 40 Super-8mm short films between 1978 and 1986. Using everything from “Star Wars” action figures to homemade spaceship sets and made with help from friends, neighbor kids, band classmates, and fellow art students, Bookwalter’s horror, sci-fi, and comedy shorts & music videos riff on favorite movies and songs with the occasional flash of inspired originality. This was the fledgling director’s homegrown film school which paved the way for an exhaustive series of features made over the two decades that followed.

Newly restored from 2K scans of original Super-8mm film elements for the first time ever, this Limited Edition Blu-ray assembles all 24 completed shorts, now with additional finishing work on “Go Insane” (1985) and “Tomorrow” (1986). Also included are more than 30 minutes of outtakes and footage from abandoned projects which haven’t seen the light of a projector since the early ‘80s, capped off with brand-new commentary by the filmmaker.
